Understanding Zirconia Ceramics
Zirconia, commonly referred to as zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), is a white, high-performance ceramic known for its exceptional surface finish. Compared to alumina ceramics, zirconia ceramics offer significantly higher fracture toughness and tensile strength, making them less brittle and more resistant to external impact.
Common Types of Zirconia
The most common types of zirconia ceramics are Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) and Magnesia-Stabilized Zirconia (MSZ). YSZ typically operates at temperatures up to 500°C, while MSZ can withstand temperatures as high as 2200°C. Zirconia ceramics can also be customized in color to enhance aesthetic appeal and reflectivity, with options like black or green zirconia.
